Pastors, do you do these "turn to your neighbor" things? If so, why? I've never figured out what the purpose of that was. It always seemed corny and silly to me.
If you are not a pastor, does your pastor do this? Do you feel it's worth doing or not, and why?

Not my style, during our communion services we do "pass the peace" that is we greet each other with the "peace of Christ"

My pastor does. Even the pastor at the church where I was previously a member did this. My take is that the pastor is driving home a point in his sermon, to me it felt strange because I normally sit at the end of the pew and my son sits on my left and he's sometimes engaged in writing or reading his Sunday school book, so I don't usually repeat the 'say to your neighbor' request to him.

Eww mine does, we are told to turn to the person and tell them how good looking they are. I really hate it, its very ackward. I wish he'd stop.

I for one do not do these antics, and a second verse to that song is that i do not understand the reasoning behind anyone doing it.

No, we don't. I used to be in a church that did that and I refused to participate. It's fake and annoying.

Our pastor suggests finding a couple of folks you don't know and greeting them....I don't have a problem with that.....

My husband and I visited a local church. A member of the church instructed everyone to get up and form a circle and hold hands with the people to your left and right. Then, they did the "turn to the person on your right" thing, from what I can remember. I believe they also said a prayer. We were not members, only visitors, so we just sat in our seats while they did this. It was very awkward. We just really didn't know what to do, since we hadn't really been there before. I later spoke with a friend who attends that church, and she said that she really dislikes doing the circle thing. I was glad that we weren't the only ones feeling awkward!

Our church does this....
it's usually done by the person who is "chairperson" of the worship service that day. I find it awkward as well.

Oh my goodness, this is at the top of my list of annoying preacher habits, lol, as if the list is long. The only other thing on my list is preachers constantly reminding me that they won't be preaching much longer or that they are getting ready to wrap it up.
My former pastor, bless his heart, NEVER DID THIS and if ever he did it was to be silly or something. Sadly he passed away last year and this was one of the things that came up when they were talking about the search for a new pastor. Don't stand up there and tell us to tell each other stuff while we are sitting. You've got the floor, you tell'em!!!
Now that's not about mid-worship fellowship periods and stuff. We do those kinds of things and greet one another, etc. But that whole turn to your neighbor and tell them yada, yada, yada is a serious peeve.

My pastor hasn't done it yet, but its done alot in the denomination I am in. More so in the bigger churches. The pastors always seem to think its funny. I think when you are a teen or young adult it might be, but I always cringed when he said it. My friend and I always did it to one another instead and we never got up to greet people. It was a church of like 6000!

I'm not quite sure what to say. I never saw it as a bad thing whether I was the one on the platform or in the congregation.

Aha, we do it. But we all know it's really cheesy and it's incredibly fun because the guy who says it is Scottish so we all get to do it in a Scottish accent.

I do not like it.. and I have never ever asked for a congregation to do it nor would I.
When I am in the service and the pastor/preacher asks this... I always turn and say to the person next to me, "what he said......" in a tone that they know it is a bit infantile to have been asked to do.
We're adults, not participants at a Vegas hypnotist stage show.
But then again.... in some church circles... there is no difference.

Yeah, I've always done that, too. I might greet my husband or one of my kids next to me, since usually that's who's sitting on my right anyway.
When the preacher says to "turn to the person on your right", if everyone turns to the person on their right they are looking at someone else's back anyway.

Lynn! So good to see you again! I hope you are here to stay.  I agree, though, that I don't mind the fellowship time as long as it's longer than 30 seconds and we're not told what to say or to whom to say it. Most churches give you enough time to shake hands with someone and that's not enough time to actually start to get to know anyone.

Lol! My husband is our current pastor, and he doesn't do this. He hates it as much as I do. I'd have a serious talk with him if he tried it!
