Hey, Armydude and QTman,
Now, to explain, our families are not real military -- not my parents, not the inlaws (except my present husband's father, a very gentle man who served as an MP in WWII), and not my generation. Sure, both of my brothers were injured and left the service in the '50s, and both my husbands were drafted for Viet Nam, but we just are not military-minded.
We were at my daughter's home a couple nights ago, and we were talking about their youngest son -- going in first grade. Now, I hadn't even allowed my children to have or play with guns, and there are no guns in my house for the grandchildren. But Nate has guns, and everything becomes a gun for him.
So my daughter told me something that really surprised me. He prays every night for the soldiers, that they will be safe, healthy, and not be hurt. Well, I loved that. I am not into war, but I admire our young people who have the guts to go and I pray for them, but my little grandboy's prayers probably have more sway with circumstances than mine ever will.

I was listening to one of the "talking heads" on the radio this morning and he was mentioning the trouble that Tyson was having with paid holidays. Evidently they have alot of muslems on the staff now and they wanted the end of Ramadan off. Tyson agreed if they traded it for another holiday. Labor Day was the traded holiday. But now they have a bunch of folks who aren't muslem who were looking forward to spending Labor Day with family and can't. What a can of worms.

Being of a belief that requires certain Sabbaths off does make it hard on the workplace, but fortunately, I work where they do all they can to allow me to have the days off that I need. However, my days off should not affect others' days off. Are you writing that everyone has to take the Muslim day off and they cannot take their own day off? That's nuts.

I read an update last night and now they are offering both holidays this year, and next year Labor day will still be a holiday and they are offering a floating holiday where one can take any day they choose, so the Muslims will be able to take their day off

That sounds fair enough. Thank you for checking the updated story. I have been busy with other stuff.
As much as I don't like to work Sunday mornings, the work I have now requires it twice a month. sigh, but I am blessed to be bringing some money into the household to help rebuild our savings. Makes it harder to find a home church... we are still looking.
I like the idea of veterans' day...not necessarily to take a day off. I remember when Martin Luther King day wasn't a holiday. NH was one of the last states to institute it as a day off from school. The thinking was "if we want the kids to know who he was and what he did, keep them in school and teach them about it." With a day off the kids go out and snowmobile or play video games and don't give a thought about MLK...

It does appear that most don't really give a thought to many of the holidays they are given, but for most of us, they still give a day we wouldn't otherwise have for family.

There is a nice store nealy on the Florida/Georgia boarder on Hi 75. It is a Christmas store and they are going out of business. They have other nice decorative things as well but half the store is very nice christmas decor. Their sign says this:" thanks for ten good and two so-so years".

ooOOOOooohhh labor day, do nurses in maternity wards get to take the day off?
Just a thought, with Faye blowing through Florida and South GA I wonder how many babies will be born in late May of 09?

I'm a stickler of sorts to "order" so I'll wait. lol.
In fact I used to wait until the day after Thanksgiving to start
my old traditions and end them after New Years Day.
