I would like to join you all in this quest to be healthy..... I know I have tried many before and succeed but then get all *up-myself* and fall of the cycle.... however this time I am determined cause for a change I can see my health not being the best... before it was about vanity only... and being drop dead georgeous... right now.. I KNOW I need to get healthy as I have a lot of demands on my body to come with this coming year. I have a 3 year old who I have to say i am very blessed with. He doesn't run around way too much and he is happy to just sit and play with blocks.. but I would love to join him up in some sport in the summer so he coudl become active.. (he is VERY slow even when we used to go to the park).. and then am also expecting number 2 in July.... so i KNOW I need to get my butt into gear.. yeah I am not going to loose big right now.. but I would love to not put on ANY weight during this pregnancy (without it being unhealthy for the baby of course)... this would mean that I eat healthy and do get some exercise in that will make me stronger so that i can look after a new born and a toddler.... Any suggestions are welcome Sherry

Grace, congrats on your 2 pound loss ... WOOO HOOO! Sherry, welcome! My suggestion for you right now would be twofold: (1) start eating healthier foods. More fresh veggies/fruits, more whole grains, more fiber, more lean protein. This will ensure you and your baby are getting the best nutrition possible. Read labels and avoid foods with HFCS and transfats and hydrogenated oils. (2) Get more active. Whether it be walking, playing, exercising, whatever ... the more you move your body, the healthier you will be. You can even dance to the radio! Look for some fun activties you can do alone or with your family .... and just be more active than you used to be! Walking, by the way, is WONDERFUL exercise!!! Of course, check with your doctor before making any big changes! You can do this!!!!

Thanks, Harvie. And Welcome, Sherry. That's exciting you have a 3-year-old and another on the way. Yes, you are one busy momma. Exercising will get you into better shape for the delivery, and good nutrition will be nourishment to yourself and the baby. As a bonus, you may lose some weight. I've known women who lose weight during their pregnancy and it's fine, but their doctors are usually concerned to a point, but once they see that mom and baby are healthy, they're fine with it. Keep us posted.

thanks you guys.... The werid thing is I actually happen to LOVE to exercise.. I feel sooo powerful afterwards.... and I used to be .. once -upon- a time... a gym junkie....but I was never small..but I was very very VERY fit....back in my single days that is of course... and now.. I will start going to the gym for a while.. but then something will happen and I will put it off...then never get back into it again... I even have an elliptical in my basement (doesn't everyone have one of those? heheh).. I have used... umm... 4 times!.. shame on me... BUT... I am determined to get back into it.. slowly... but staying consistant this time....also I will try to keep up with this thread.. I find that being able to relate to someone and someone else relate to me.. helps.... Sherry

I have found that others expectations make me more likely to exercise. I take skating lessons so there will be someone at the rink expecting me to come and work. I'm more likely to exercise at home if dh pushes me. Could you ask you hubby to help you? To offer to play with/bathe your son while you are on the elliptical? To offer to do calastenics while you use the machine? To make sure you are faithful to exercise?

yes... I actually have no excuse in that sence.... hubby is not big into exercise at all but he will look after the little one if I want to go to the gym or even use my machine... this lack of motivation is purley from me.....but I KNOW I have to do this now because when it will be 2 kids.. it will be a little tougher to escape per-se..... but this is why I joined this thread.. am usually a lurker more than anything... but I figured if I can just be accountable in some small way... it may help me!...(And the fact that people have actually responded to my posts makes it even more exciting in a way.. usually my posts hey "overlooked" s ince am not a regular)

One of the nice things about working toward eating healthier and getting more exercise is that every DAY is a chance again to succeed ... and every meal is a chance again to succeed. I've found that setting a weekly goal for myself with exercise can be helpful. Some weeks I try to get it done in the first half of the week so I can mark it off my "to do" list ... other weeks I put it off toward the very end .... but regardless of the ultimate outcome, I end up doing SOME exercise (sometimes ALL of it) ... which I may not have done if I hadn't set the goal. Now I try to make little deals with myself .... if I walk 15 minutes on the treadmill, I get to watch my favorite TV show .... or read .... or something along those lines. Maybe 15 minute spurts would be a good starting goal? When it comes to healthy eating, I try to win the battle at the grocery store by making the best choices I can. Sure, there will always be things at home or out to tempt me, but at least I'm not personally strewing my path with temptations! I did grocery shopping today and tried to, as always, stock up on a fridge-full of fresh veggies and produce! Red peppers, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, squash, spinach, lettuce, corn, brussels sprouts, artichoke, onions, snow peas, carrots, green beans ..... we are STOCKED! Now I just have to sit down and do some meal planning for the next week! Oh, and I bought tofu (first time ever) ... I decided to be adventurous!!!! The scale hasn't budged in 4 days ... but it's still my TOM, too. I get one last weigh-in tomorrow (March 1) to see if I managed to lose any more for February, otherwise I will just have to accept those 6.2 pounds and call it good. (That's a 1.5 pound per week average.) Keep at it, everyone!

I want to join too if I may. I have pregnancy weight to lose - 25 pounds worth. I read in a fitness article somewhere that weight gained during puberty, pregnancy and menopause is the hardest weight to lose. Has anyone else heard this? Starting weight: 145lbs - February 6 (2 weeks after baby) Current weight: 143lbs - March 2 Goal weight: 120lbs Mini-goal: 130lbs by April 18 (leave for Disney World Vacation!) I am a little frustrated because I've been faithfully exercising and being careful with my nutrition for almost a month now and only lost 2 pounds. I guess I need to be a bit more strict on the food and maybe add more cardio. I am currently basically following the Body for Life program. Alternating cardio days with weight training days. I will consider increasing the cardio I guess.

I haven't heard this (I have heard that the more times we gain/lose weight, the harder it is for us to lose and it gets progressively harder). I had understood that breastfeeding is really helpful in trying to lose weight though! In reality though, I don't suppose it really matters ~ we are all individuals and our bodies react differently in each cirucumstance. Your baby is little over a month old and if you're breastfeeding you need to be careful that you're not depriving both of you of essential nutrients and calories. (I've just started a nutrition course and I can post what it says about weight loss after pregnancy if you wish ~ it is for mothers who breastfeed though, don't know if you do). Remember that if you're doing weight training, you may be losing weight, but gaining muscle so it may look like you're not losing weight. You need to use some other guides to see how you're doing, not just what you weigh. Get out your tape measure and measure yourself ~ or (and this is easier) assess how your clothes are fitting.

Sure agapetos, you can post that info. I am breastfeeding and that's why I'm trying to lose weight more by exercising than by "dieting". I'm continuing to eat when hungry - just trying to limit/cut out desserts and other junk type foods. And, yes, I do know that muscle weights more than fat, so I am definitely hopeful that that is why the scale hasn't gone down much yet - but that should happen eventually! So far I only have one pair of non-maternity pants that fit me (well, other than lounging wear). I sent my husband out to buy me them because I was so sick of wearing maternity pants. Anyway, I think they are maybe slightly looser than when I first got them, but it's not very noticeable and I'm hoping it's not just wishful thinking! Oh - and a HUGE congratulations to those of you who have lost around 100 pounds - that's amazing! You're determination and perserverance is totally applauded!!!

I sent my husband out to buy me them because I was so sick of wearing maternity pants. This reminds me of a friend, who's mil bought her some jeans after she had a baby. The jeans were several sizes larger than usual but were a wonderful gift after months of maternity wear! Tammy, going by what I posted from that book, you're doing really well and losing much more than the average. quote:
Data from the UK and Sweden indicates that the average volume of milk in the first 3 months of lactation ranges from 680ml to 820ml/day. The energy cost of producing this milk, has been calculated at 570-690 cals per day for the first 3 months. Some of this extra energy can be met from fat stores laid down during pregancy, although the extent to which this is mobilised appears to vary between women. It is assumed that, on average, 0.5kg (1lb) of stored fat is used per month, although women have been recorded as losing between 0.6 and 0.8kg/month during the first 4-6 months after delivery. In overweight women, a loss of 2kg/month (4.4lb) may be possible. Undertaking intense exercise to speed up weight loss can raise lactic acid levels in the blood, which will pass into the milk and affect the taste. However moderate exercise is beneficial and should be encouraged, as long as energy needs continue to be met. From Human Nutrition by Mary Basari

I went biking again on Sunday .... first around the neighborhood and then over to the river. After coming home and running a few errands, we then hopped in the car and drove to the river for some hiking .... and had a blast. (Oy, my legs are sure tired, though!) Wow, hiking and biking in the same day -- a brand new first for me! Of course, I had the major munchies yesterday and ate a lot of lean protein, but kept my calories reasonable. (We won't even speculate why the scale showed a 1.5 pound gain this morning for an USWID ... I am sure it's water!) Lunch today can best be described as eclectic. Cheese and crackers, broccoli, cherry tomatoes and hard-boiled egg whites. (The crackers are Quaker Quakes rice cakes and the cheese is Laughing Cow light gourmet cheese bites.) Dinner today is a nice tasty salad with 7.5 ounces of surimi (imitation crab), Miracle Whip Light, romaine, cucumber, radishes, with a yummery-buttery ear of fresh organic corn and a crisp n' juicy apple for dessert. That's 15 servings of veggies for the day, a respectable amount. Thanks to the cheese and the surimi, I actually have my fat intake at 15% for once, wooo hoooo! (I'm such a silly!) My wonderful DH is flying a mission today, and I'm off to run errands ... bird seed at the Wild Bird Store, spices and seasonings at my favorite Dollar store, then I'm running by a friend's house to get "measured" .... and finally, I promised my wonderful DH I'd pick up some milk and spray whipped cream for him at the store. (If I remember, I may buy some celery for my salad!) It's scheduled to be 69 degrees and sunny today, so I am definitely planning a bike ride this afternoon! By the way, last night's broiled boneless pork chops were yummy and definitely worth a repeat performance!!! BREAKFAST one cup Fiber One Cereal one half cup unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze one toasted Thomas' light multigrain english muffin two tablespoons roasted red pepper hummus LUNCH six hard boiled egg whites four servings of steamed broccoli one cup of cherry tomatoes 12 Quaker Quakes mini rice cakes (cheddar) 12 cubes, Laughing Cow Light Gourmet Cheese Bites DINNER 7.5 ounces of imitation crab (surimi) two tablespoons Miracle Whip Light salad dressing 50 calories' worth of romaine with mixed spring greens one medium cucumber two small whole tomatoes one medium ear of corn one medium apple NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION FOR 3 MEALS (excluding after-dinner snacks) calories ........... 1196 fat .................. 23 grams saturated fat... 4 grams protein ........... 78 grams carbs ............ 219 grams cholesterol ... 77 mg fiber ................ 66 grams veg servings ... 15 servings meatless.......... breakfast, lunch Vitamin A ......... 437% Vitamin C ......... 699% calcium ............. 97% iron .................. 104% NOTES .............. Need more protein in my after-dinner snacks

Hey, Tammy! I'm glad you joined us. I have had a good day getting back into the groove of being healthy. I skated for 2 hours this morning. I worked on jumps and spins for a long time, so a lot of starting and stopping instead of constant motion. So it was probably more like 75 minutes of exercise. For breakfast, I ate a breakfast bar (130 calories) and had i cup of coffee with stevia (0 Calories.) For lunch, I ate a sandwich with just under 4 oz chicken, light swiss cheese, and whole grain bread (350 calories) and veggies with hummus (90 calories.) For dinner, I plan to have beef tenderloin, green beans, and potatoes (400 calories total meal.) For a snack, I will have a lowfat banana and cranberry smoothie. (217 calories) That puts me right at 1200 calories, so I have 200 calories "to spare" if I need another snack. I'll try not to use it, but 1200 calories is usually a bit too low for me... especially after skating.
