In the UK anyhow... who's going to be watching, who's going to be jealous of those of those watching!

I'm going to be jealous because I think we in the states are about a year behind you all on the other side of the pond...

Did Scifi channel take it off? I've been looking for it, but haven't found it. :(

I'm not sure - I usually watch it on BBC America. Sci-fi usually shows something for a few months, then switches to something else for a few months, then....

SciFi is going to be running season 4 of DW just a few weeks later than the UK. Look for SciFi to be showing the Christmas Special sometime mid/late April, and then begin the next week with the first ep of season 4.

We've gone from being a year behind, to several months, now to a few weeks. Likely a side effect of the writer's strike, which would have had an impact on SciFi's new programming for the spring.

US folks likely won't see much promotion for the new Dr. Who season till SciFi gets past the launch of this season's Battlestar Galactica which starts in early April.

SciFi will also air The Sarah Jane Adventures, which IMO is kind of odd. It's been a long time since SciFi has aired children's programming, and DW is likely the most "familiy-friendly" thing they air.

Based on this schedule, I predict BBC-America airing season 4 in the fall.

K...the last one we saw was Martha Jones leaving the Doctor at the end of the season cause she assumed he was still hung up on Rose.

I have no idea what season that was...anyone?

We started watching Torchwood as the spin-off and Martha was on that a week or two ago.

I don't know if her reason was that he was still hung up on Rose as much as she realized that he didn't feel that way about her, and wasn't going to, period. When he lost his memory/went human, he fell in love with that school nurse from pre-WW1.

Three, or twenty-whatever if you're counting from the real beginning.

Ah, Torchwood. The 21st century is when everything changes. People start having indiscriminate short term flings with everyone they work with, regardless of gender, and it doesn't even disrupt the working environment one bit!

For those not keeping up, Martha is now Dr. Martha Jones and she works for UNIT.

Or anything that moves in their path of vision...gender is secondary of course .

My husband isn't as in love with the show any longer. He'll still watch with me, but if there's any inkling that Jack and "anybody" are going to be alone...he's outta there!

This one (Catherine Tate) appeared in the Christmas before last's Christmas Special, with the evil Santas and the giant spider - did you not see that one?

yeah, I just didn't get that she was her and not the other "her"

anyway...the BBC I have on Directv has Dr. Who on April 5, but the description is a repeat...so maybe it'll come on a different time.

However, I think we saw that last season of Dr. Who on Sci-Fi on Fridays before or in the middle of all the Stargates and Galacticas. I abhor Battlestar Galactica...so hopefully the hoopla will be over soon and they'll have the Doctor in his proper place.

OK, some answers to various posts here:

Folks in the US with cable, FIOS, DISH, or Direct TV generally get BBC-A (BBC America). And it's not the same as BBC in the UK, although it carries mostly BBC shows (I think BBC-A is affiliated with NBC). Sometimes we get a show fairly quickly after the BBC airing on BBC-A (the recent season of Torchwood)...sometimes it takes years (the last season of MI-5 just started here in the US).

SciFi has first airing rights to Doctor Who in the US. Then BBC-A gets it, usually about 6 months later. And yeah, SciFi hasn't officially announced the airing date to begin the 4th season, but BBC is only getting around to setting the exact date themselves around now. The plan has been for SciFi to begin airing late in April. Since we have the Christmas Special to air first, that will mean we'll be 2 or 3 weeks behind the BBC.

The companion with the giant robot dog is Sarah Jane (don't remember her last name). She was a companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors, and showed up in a reunion episode with the 10th and Rose.

If you're going to Netflix any of the old shows, I recommend especially the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) ones. Sarah Jane will be in the early ones of that series. Like Rose, she stayed with the Doctor through a regeneration (3 to 4).

UNIT is a fictional international organization for fighting aliens that has long been associated with the show. The U and N used to stand for "United Nations" at the time of the 3rd and 4th Doctors, but now the UN doesn't want its name used on fictional drama, so it's simply "United" whatever. Think of Torchwood as some special black ops section of the CIA, but UNIT as like military special forces. They GENERALLY cooperate. Sometimes. If you saw the first two seasons of the current Dr. Who, than you know Torchwood was started by Queen Victoria after she had a run in with the Doctor and - I think it was - werewolves?

The new 4th season companion is Donna, who was also in last (3rd) season's Christmas special (Donna was "The Runaway Bride"). She is played by Catherine Tate, who is very well known in the UK for a sketch comedy show (if you ever saw Tracy Ulman's old show in the US, from what little I've seen it's somewhat similar).

However, you can expect something rather unusual regarding companions in the upcoming season. Spoiler text in white - Martha will be back for several episodes. Towards the end of the season, we will see Rose, Jack, Mickey, Jackie and Sarah Jane. Rose is supposed to be back for three episodes,

Some minor corrections and additions to the above post...

Sarah Jane's last name is "Smith", and her robot dog is K-9... the one she has now is actually K-9 Mark IV... Mark I was built by a human in the future and given to the 4th Doctor, who in turn left it with his companion Leela on Gallifrey. Mark II was built by the Doctor and left with Romana in E-space. Mark III was a gift to Sarah from the Doctor as an apology for having abandoned her so abruptly (in the ill fated `80's spin-off "K-9 and Company").
Sarah has appeared with 4 Doctors for certain and there's been some implication that others have visited her at other times.

Tom Baker's episodes are good for the most part... his last season is a little weak. Also good are Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) Peter Davison (5th Doctor, and the one who appeared in the Children in Need mini-episode), and Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor).

UNIT used to stand for "United Nations Intelligence Taskforce". As the above post said, the UN decided they don't like having their name used in fictional drama, so the acronymn now stands for "UNified Intelligence Taskforce". It's an international paramilitary organization established in around 1968 to investigate alien happenings and oversee first contact situations. There are divisions of UNIT in most major countries, and while made up primarily of military personnel from the host country, they operate more-or-less outside the host country's chain of command. The 3rd Doctor served as UNIT-UK's scientific advisor during his Time Lord imposed exhile on Earth in the 1970's, and maintains UNIT credentials including unilimited access to UNIT's computer system and, apparently, a command code phrase that allows him to assume command of UNIT personnel in an emergency without being questioned about it (Aliens of London).

With the exception of Jack Harkness, Rose, and Sarah Jane, any other people from the Doctor's past who might be returning this season (including Rose's family) is rumor as yet. Martha will be returning 4 or 5 episodes into the season and remain for the rest of the episodes. She's now a full doctor and was recruited by UNIT at the suggestion of the Doctor (see Torchwood). Who his companion will be for the telemovies planned for 2009 in place of a full series is unknown at this point, but one of the most persistant rumors seems to be that a character played by Georgia Moffet (Peter Davison's daughter) will become a new companion. She previously auditioned for the role of Rose, and Russell T. Davies is apparently quite taken with her. She's definitely scheduled to be in a late episode, but it remains to be seen whether or not she'll be a new companion or not. SPOILER in white... It's also rumored that she'll be a cloned "daughter" of the Doctor, created for some reason by an alien race from a sample of the Doctor's DNA they stole at some point. Since Davros is also rumored to be making an appearance this series, maybe he collected it from the 5th Doctor...

rabstark, you are quite the expert on matters regarding Doctor Who! I didn't remember how many K-9s there were, for one thing.

But part of the reason why my knowledge is on the spotty side is that in the place I've lived for the last 30 years, except a few years spent in the Los Angeles area, has never shown classic Doctor Who on PBS. Yes, our PBS station balked at the licensing rates. Being in LA was a real treat, Who-wise, since it was on every Saturday afternoon. At my folks house we could get the Maryland PBS station that showed it, once cable came along (otherwise it was like watching through a snowstorm). And, and my in-laws, we could see it on the Charlotte PBS station...providing no one was sleeping in the family room that night(a long story).

At any rate, hubby and I have filled in many of the bits and pieces of the 4th Doctor, some of the 3rd, less so of 5, 6, and 7. Eight was only the tv movie (other than books and audio dramas) so we saw that on first broadcast.

If anyone is a REAL fan and considering FIOS, FYI that along with SciFi and BBC-A, FIOS carries Illusion OnDemand. I was real excited to get it seeing as they're showing classic Dr. Who. Come to find out that it's REAL classic...as in the 2nd Doctor!

And...for those who aren't familiar with the classic series, expect it to come across as low budget and frequently cheesy. Because it was. But with actors like Tom Baker, that became part of its appeal.

And FYI...certain things are not merely rumors. There are photos of the filming of the last few episodes of the current season floating around online. And they tend to confirm what I've posted.

So I should assume you guys are serious about your Dr. Who?

I saw David Tenant on a recent (US Aired) Graham Norton show and he was too funny. He's just weird enough and seems just the perfect Dr. Who.

I really didn't think I'd like David Tennant as the Doctor, having really got into Christopher Eccleston in that role. But I very quickly got smitten, and am now a fan of his generally, not just as the Doctor.

He's playing Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company this Summer/Autumn, and we're all hoping to go and see him in it when the production comes to London this winter (with Patrick Stewart as his Uncle - woo hoo!)

I agree. I was so sad when the other Dr. left, but I really enjoy David Tenant in the part!

The other Dr. Who (Christopher Eccleston) was in several episodes of Heroes.

Whe I recognized him, I was all like "Look Dr. Who is on Heroes!"

It's always so hard when you get used to someone in one role! It's hard to see them in another role!

LOL... Been a fan of the show since I was in high school... even worked with a fan club and edited their newsletter until I got bogged down with more trivial things like college! . I remember having to sneek use of the little b&w TV my parents kept in our camper to watch the original airing of the 20th Anniversary special episode, "The Five Doctors"... which we in the US got a couple of days before it aired in the UK. I'm not quite as hardcore a fan as I was back then, but I do follow the new show pretty closely. I get a kick out of David Tennant because he's a major fan of the original show from my era... The mini-episode "Time Crash" is the first time I've gotten truely emotional in the new series because David's whole speech about Peter being "my Doctor" is obviously the person talking and not the character. I can relate... as much as I enjoy all of the Doc's incarnations, Peter Davision is "my Doctor" too... He was in the role when I first got really interested in the show.

I definitely agree with you that if anyone is a REAL fan, they need to get ahold of the early seasons of the original series. It's just a shame that there are so few left, particularly of the second Doctor era... Someone at the BBC must have been brain-dead the day they decided to purge the archives just because the material was in b&w!

Most of the 5th, 6th, & 7th Doctor's stuff is available on video or DVD at this point. Sylvester McCoy's (7th) stuff is great on the whole. He was a hoot... I got to meet and interview him for the newsletter I worked on at a convention he appeared at before his first season aired. He was a fan too... the 2nd Doctor was "his" Doctor.

Yeah, the show was always low budget (it was, after all considered a children's show, and heaven forbid one should spend money on a children's show) and could be a bit on the cheesy side. But the scripts were usually well written and personally I've never had any trouble ignoring the so-so production values and even the b&w of the first two Doctor's eras. And you're right... to a large extent all of that became part of the show's charm.

Potential spoiler in white print alert (Yeah, I know. This edit is sort of closing the barn door after the horse is out, but oh well.)*sigh* just found a production photo from this series' filming that appears to have Jackie in it... I was really hoping the business of having Rose's family turn up as well would stay in the realm of rumor. The cast list for the last 2 or 3 episodes of Series 4 is going to be top-heavy enough as it is what with adding Rose and Jack in addition to Martha and Donna.

BTW for any aspiring Whovians out there... the best website for info about both the new and old series is Outpost Gallifrey, and the best place in the US and Canada to get DW goodies is from a company called "Who North America"... I won't link to it, since it's a commercial site.

High school eh?

Quite the latecomer then! (My dad used to watch Doctor Who when I was little, and I mean little! I used to watch SERIES 1, with William Hartnell, from behind the sofa at 5.50pm every Saturday night! I really started enjoying it in Series 2 with Patrick Troughton, even though he was rather weird, but preferred Jon Pertwee.

Yep, OG is a great resource.

So come on then, what Doctor Who memorabilia do you have?

I don't have a lot, but I do have a 6" inch grey and black Dalek watching over me from my windowsill by my computer. And I also have a gold dalek double egg cup in front of me, where I store my jewellery! lol

Oh, yes, I was smitten as well. It's ok with my husband, he likes David too. Not in a Jack way, of course.
