Well, I had forgotten that they do make lunchboxes differently nowadays. Mine was the old metal kind that the paint chipped and got beat up pretty fast, not because of being abusive to it, but because of normal wear and tear.

Jansportbackpacks have a lifetime warranty. You can send them back if the zipper breaks, the seams fall apart or whatever and they'll either fix it or replace it. Personally, I think they are way cuter than LLBean and you can get them anywhere!

I hope this isn't too off-topic, although it definitely fits under "what do you reuse?"
We did similar, but added a sorting step, so it wasn't so much "rainbow" --of course we had a LOT of crayons from several old 32 & 64 sets. We sorted into "tree trunk" "deep woods" "autumn harvest" "bricks" "ocean & storm" and "leftovers." And instead of a pie pan, a muffin tin.

Do you guys really all have that many requirements in high school? When I was in high school there wasn't any lists. We had to have looseleaf notebook paper to turn assignments in on (or ripped out of a spiral notebook as long as you got rid of the frillies) and we had to have covers on our textbooks: often made out of brown paper bags. I don't think we were even "required" to take notes in class but then that showed in our grades. Math teachers generally required pencil.

Here we don't really find out what the highschool teachers expect the kids to have until after the first day of school. At least that's what I've been told. We may be able to find out more information at registration a week before school starts. It's likely not to be a big deal, although I do know that Ty will be expected to have a copy of whatever book it is that he will need to read over the summer (depends upon if he is in the honors English/AP World History block or just honors English- we should know for sure on what he tested into within a week or so) And for Geometry he'll be expected to have this particular scientific calculator but we already have that as well.

When I was in highschool (not too far back  ), we didn't get lists. We just knew we needed a notebook for each subject, a couple folders, pens, pencils, and a scientific calculator. Oh, and gym clothes. That was pretty much it.

We only had 2 classes where we could use a calculator: trig for finding trig functions quickly after we knew how to calculate them and in physics for working out formulas.

On bookbags, I would second the Jansport bags.
But most of our bags last OK for more than one year, even the cheapy garage sale ones (that I only buy if they look good and the kids like them or I think they will).
For HS they don't really need that much here. We did have to go out and buy a scientific calculator right quick one year. We bought Spanish dictionary once, but then I think E ended up buying another one from the teacher because she needed a certain one. Maybe. Generally it's whatever notebooks and folders the kid wants to keep themselves organized.

Do y'all reuse the plastic pencil boxes? For some reason we buy new ones most of the time. I always wonder if the plastic hinge part would hold up for another year of multiple openings and closings a day. Although by 4th and 5th grade maybe they're not used as much if the pencils are kept separate. Do they last through a second year? Mostly they come in handy for other things around the house.

I have several of those plastic pencil boxes that have been used multiple years! We have at least 6 of them floating around the house and 3 of them will be used this fall unless I can justify purchasing larger ones.

We'll be reusing Noah's for next year. We got him an extra long one, so the ruler would fit in it too. The hinges on it are fine, and he did use it when we were hsing too, so he used it a full year. It probably took more abuse hsing than in school, since in school he doesn't have younger siblings messing with his stuff.

I don't think I've ever seen a pencil box big enough to hold a ruler; that'd be nice because those little ones don't hold much. Maybe I haven't looked. I just went into my son's room and asked him if he wanted to reuse his pencil box and he said sure. He thought he'd already reused it this last year, but I'm not sure about that. Maybe I've been reusing them and have a bad memory. This one is bigger than the smaller standard ones. I found a foldable ruler at a garage sale that fits in it. Although I think fourth grade is the only year they are asked to bring rulers.

I am waiting until friday to buy, because they suspend sales tax on school items (even clothes) this weekend. However, it is my work weekend, so I may just bag it. (gotta give Ceasar what Ceasar is due)
But, we reuse every single thing we can. ds is fussing about using a backpack that is "around" because it does not have a cartoon character on it, the kid is gonna hafta toughen up!
I agonize about the "community stuff" I tend to buy more if less is asked for perverse of me I know. But if they ask for one box of tissue I often send 2 or 3, but if they ask for 3, I only send one. (but will send more later, and I let the teachers know usually, that I will donate to the classroom, it is just hard when you are laying out for 4 kids.) I label "everything" (except, you know paper towels or plates or something.) And I only send 12 pencils... one year the teacher asked for 48!! that is just craziness.
My daughter, a teacher, says I should send everything, because it is not a huge sacrifice for us... but I do get annoyed.

This year with moving, I bought everything new because I can't find everything. Then it all went on sale so I took my receipt back and made them adjust the prices. The lady was not happy with me, but I was not going to let that go by. But everything is labled and backpacks are packed and waiting.
