I guess I'd prefer a picture of Jesus over
the portrait of the pastor and his wife. lol.

Will continue to pray for you on this. Is not easy to stand on beliefs and it can be trying at times. As one who absolutely agrees it does not belong in a church I pray that people will see that it is a problem if people are seeing it as a picture of Jesus and needs to be lit up. The Lord was not described physically in any Scriptures other than Revelation I believe for the simple reason that God did not want people worshiping an image. I have heard many people say Jesus had to stand out and be different or He would not be recognized yet Judas told the soldiers the one I kiss is the one seems that Jesus did not stand out in the crowd.

BTW this comes from a guy who actually shaved and cut hair once simply because someone after an Ester play was told he should have played the part of Jesus cause he looks more like Jesus in picture than the guy playing the part.

That's actually not a bad idea.

Yes, you could 'blot' out the transgression.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ruth. Did anyone leave the church over it?

Yes one older couple did leave. There is no talking to them. Beleive me I did try but they would not listen.

In the last church we attended there was discussion about remodeling the sanctuary.
The pastor made an announcement that there would be a meeting held for whoever wanted to discuss and put ideas in.

Who showed?
Pastors wife and me.

Who complained when we painted and hung new draperies and art on the walls?
Everyone who wasn't at the meeting.

Not in front in the sanctuary???

I was wondering when someone would mention the above. LOL
The church I grew up in and was a member of for most of my life was founded in 1933. The founder and his wife retired in 1983, and a new pastor & wife were installed. Since the late 50's early 60's there were two gigantic pictures in the front of the sancturary, one on the right one of the pulpit of the founder and one on the left of the pulpit his wife when they were like in their mid-twenties. Although the founder and wife were like spiritual parents to the new pastor and wife, they never cared for either picture being in the sanctuary. In the mid 90's we had the santuary painted and there was talk of moving the pictures into the chapel, another area of the church and having no pictures at all in the sanctuary. This was their desire but they were so afraid of offending the older saints, they didn't follow their convictions and put those two pictures right back up there. To this day they're still pastor and first lady of the church, those two humoungous pictures are still there and they still regret it.

My advice is to follow your convictions, God gave them to you for a reason. I pray for a smooth transistion of the picture into another part of the church. Be blessed.

You could always break the picture up into small pieces and sale them for a church fundraiser

Sometimes we are well intended, but get focused on minor matters.

Does this picture minister to people?

If a non-Christian were to come to your church, would it impress them, turn them away, or not really matter?

What are you doing to make the church appealing to non-Christians in your area?

I don't see blue eyes on my screen. Does that picture really have blue eyes? And the skin seems to be an olive tone. But I don't care for paintings in a sanctuary.

I know ours has blue eyes. I'm not sure about the one I linked to.

There seem to be some people who are attached to it.

It's been years since a non-Christian has been to this church.

We're a work in progress. We're hoping to go out into the community, because our church is out of the way and we don't get visitors often. There's a lot of room for improvement in our church.

LOL! LOL! They get uptight when you forget to plug it in!?!? Too funny! Yes, I say lose the picture, if that's what the pastor is leaning towards - it should ultimately be his call.

I just think a lot of times our "images" and "symbols" are subconsciously substituted for the true relationship and holiness God desires from us.

Just my .02 worth.

I grew up with a copy of that pic all over the place. There were several copies in our home and they were in every class in the congregational building.

Fast forward 30 years and I am taking a choir to an area congregation that is mostly african american. On the back wall of the platform - above and looking down on the pulpit - was a huge mural of a sub-saharan african-looking Jesus in traditional african robes. I then understood what a minority person felt looking at the european version.

IMO, any pic like that can become an idol, and if it is put in the sactuary, more easily becomes one. How can you tell if it has become an idol? When people HAVE to have it there and get upset if someone suggests removing it.

The 10 commandments say we are not to have graven images and to avoid idols. Acts 15 says we are not to have anything to do with the objects of idol worship.

Well, my husband didn't bring it up exactly in the business meeting last night. He had a long list of stuff he wanted to talk about, some things he knew already would raise some eyebrows (like only taking up one offering) and so the only thing he brought up in regard to this issue was that he'd like to update the sanctuary, and eventually hang some curtains in the back. He didn't mention that the picture would have to be moved if he did that, and no one brought it up, either. So, I guess we'll see! It'll be awhile before we address it, it looks like.

I think there has to be a diplomatic way of removing the picture from the front without wounding people in the process. Too often, we go in prepared for a fight and the people sense that and get defensive. If the issue is brought up in the leadership as an idea and a request is made for the leaders to pray about it without making any kind of decision at the meeting, perhaps it would start them thinking about it in a non-threatening way. I have a mostly older congregation and their biggest concern about change is not the change but the feeling that they are insignificant or that they are not a priority. So, when I feel a change is needed, I do my best to heap value and significance on the people. I don't know your people so I can't tell you how to do that in your situation, but I will pray for God's wisdom for both you and your church leadership.

OP, I grew up seeing that picture in my bible, in my church, in picture books, and I never once thought about worshipping it or idolizing it, or even the fact that it wasn't "ethnically accurate" (not my opinion but what I've read from these posts). It just goes to show that not everyone sees things that way. However, if you feel convicted you must do what you feel is right, with A LOT of prayer before, rather than storming in and removing it. You're treading on some sensitive feelings here, and I wouldn't blame the folks for being upset about it. I would seriously communicate your feelings to your congregration before taking action. I really feel like you're making a mountain out of a mole hill, but again, you must do what you feel is best. Good luck with this issue, and let God lead you.

During your husband's next sermon, he should say, "So...who's the white guy on the wall? I've been wondering..." Then see what happens.

(I so should not be a minister. )

it is such a simple deception, like a little trick - creating God in our image.
