I guess we all have our favourite hymns.
Here is one of mine:
"Blessed be God, our God
Who gave for us His well beloved Son
The gift of gifts, all other gifts in one,

To me, the pinnacle of English hymnology is Charles Wesley's poem, 'O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing'. My personal favorite is Fanny Crosby's 'Blessed Assurance' Jesus is mine! A close second is 'I'd Rather Have Jesus' sung by the rich voice of Jim Reeves.

Yes, 'When peace like a river' are the opening words. I think Horatio Spafford, the writer, had lost all his family at sea. "It is well, it is well with my soul'.

I actually played that organ piece on a fairly sizable pipe organ in my uncle's church back in the early 70s. Far out man!!

I've been trying for quite a few years to get my pentecostal church to sing this Pentecost carol on Pentecost Sunday. It does, after all, include so many pentecostal themes, and was written to celebrate Wesley's conversion on Whitsunday -- aka Pentecost.

Celebrating an imaginary romantic encounter in a rose garden between Mary Magdalene and Jesus? Well, why not include I don't know how to love him, a similar theme and setting and person song from JC Superstar? Or how about Paul McCartney's My Sweet Lord, where the chorus morphs from "Hallelujah" to "Hari Krishna?" In all of these cases, the hard-edged reality of the Gospel is replaced with sappy, sentimental, unreal mysticism.
After all, as C. Austin Miles pointed out, the entire purpose of his "hymn" was to induce sentimental, romantic religious feelings in those who sang it. And why not use an imaginary romantic encounter as a technique to induce those feelings? And why not use those other two songs, which also excel at creating devotional feelings?
After all, as everyone knows, the entire reason why the Second Person of the Blessed and eternal Trinity took on flesh, lived among us, died a gruesome death by torture, descended into hell, and rose again on the third day was -- so that we could enjoy sentimental, romantic religious feelings!

Pietism assumes that we can get closer to God by turning off our brains and emoting like crazy. This tradition, which has grown to malignant strength in American pop culture protestantism, is not conducive to great thinking, writing, or creativity. As a case in point, look at the Todd Bentley dog and pony show, which begins with hours of repetitive simplistic chanting, until the desired altered state of consciousness is achieved.

Be Thou My Vision
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Amazing Grace (I especially like the verses not usually sung "The Lord has promised good to me, his will my hope secures, He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures . . .)
Great is Thy Faithfulness
There is a Fountain (filled with Blood, drawn from Emmanuel's veins . . .)
